Em and I enjoyed an amazing long weekend in magical Marrakesh in February 2012. TheÂ full photoset can be found on flickr, and a highlights set in the slideshow below.
Whilst it is possible to have some great food in the restaurants around the city, our most exciting eating experiences were with street food from Hassan’s stall (number 32) in the Djemaa El-Fna at night, and in the Restaurant Place Des Ferblantiers.
As well as the classics such as chicken tajine with preserved lemons and olives, the top dishes to sample are viande hache (mini beef burgers), rate aux viande hache (chopped and fried liver – amazingly flavourful) and little mini saucisson sausages. All mopped up with delicious breads and tomato salsa and sweet Moroccan mint tea. A bargain at around Â£10 for two people to eat more than their fill!
Despite appearances to the contrary, I really can’t recommend the sheep’s head and brains. Whilst the taste was OK, the texture was gut-wrenchingly awful and I had to beat a hasty retreat from that stall back to the welcome safety of Hassan’s.
So, would we go again. Absolutely yes. Without a shadow of a doubt. And we’d stay at the Riad Diana. Must check my diary and plan another trip…
